Subject:Temple Rubbing
Posted By: Shelley Leonard Wed, May 20, 2015 IP: 70.199.137.166

This rubbing was given to my mother by a friend who's father made the rubbing at a temple in China. Can anyone tell me more about the temple is might have been? Something about the writing? Thank you

Your rubbing is after a carving now in the Xian "Stone Forest" museum of steles. It represents one of the Tang Taizong emperor's six prized horses, Qingzhui. You can read more here:

A photo of the carving that is the basis of your rubbing is here:

Thank you! Was this rubbing taken from that carving? Is the writing a poem? Thank you again.

No, your rubbing seems to come from another carving that I'm unaware of.

Stone steles were often carved with inscriptions but that doesn't appear to be the case on the original, damaged version of the horse that was taken from the Tang emperor's tomb and is now housed in the Xian museum of stelae.

Your inscription seems not a poem per se but a lyrical inscription about this horse's wonderful attributes.

I have the same rubbing hanging on my bedroom wall. It came to me after my parents died, my father's parents lived in China until 1932 and collected many antiques. We had 4 of the Taizong horse rubbings in our home when I was a boy. My parents kept them after my grandparents died and then when my parents passed on my 3 siblings and I each took one.
