Posted By: Mick Tue, Jun 02, 2015 IP: 197.86.180.177

I came across these 5 weights, heaviest is 97.3.grams. I would like to know their age and what they might be worth. Thank you.

These are ‘hantha/hintha’, the name given to chicken/duck weights. The large weight is 6 ticals (16 gms/tical), but the next weight may be 4.8 ticals as sets with a uniform scale are rare. The extremely dark bronze with no patina does not seem correct for originals, but judgement should not be made from photos. Such weights were used in Burma, Thailand, Laos, and elsewhere until they were banned by the British in the late 19th century. They are found as a variety of beast and bird forms, and are frequently known as opium weights, but were used for all sorts of goods. Search ‘opium weights’ for much more information and prices.
