Posted By: Jim Thu, Jun 25, 2015 The Japanese mark is Ku Tani, literally 'Nine Valleys'. Kutani is an area in Japan which is host to several hundred kilns. This is generic Kutani, that is, not identifiable to a a specific kiln. Your vase is finished with moriage, a process where thick colored porcelain paste is applied to the form as you would ice a cake. The gold is achieved by the use of a gold bearing compound applied as paint which upon firing deposits a thin layer of pure gold. The theme, very popular in Asian art, is that of Kannon (Quan Yin in China) the Japanese goddess of mercy shown with arhats, holy men, hence the halos. |
