Posted By: Grant M Thu, Jun 25, 2015 IP: 24.69.79.97

Can one of the experts take a stab at dating this 24" x 33 1/2" thangka. A brief description of the symbolism would be much appreciated
Many thanks

Dear Grand M. ,

Your thangka shows Manjushri the bodisattva of Wisdom (flamming sword)and Knowledge(book on a lotus flower). He is surrounded by-clockwise-a buddha,Amitayus the buddha of infinite life, another buddha,a crowned bodisattva and the White Tara.
The painter has not completed his painting as we can notice six red crosses marking non- painted surfaces.

Best regards, Rémy

Hello Remy,
Thank for taking the time to tell me more about my thangka. It's a family piece that I inherited.
With the caveat that it is extremly hard to date without actually seeing the piece - could you give me a "just a gut feeling" as to it being 20th
or 19th century. It would add to the families enjoyment of the piece.
Many thanks, Grant
