Subject:Hongshan Jade?
Posted By: Phil Sun, Jul 05, 2015 IP: 31.53.126.60

Is there any possibility this could be an old jade? Is this a type recorded in any collection? It measures 6.9 x 4.9 cm, SG 3, hardness greater than 5.5. I would not be greatly disappointed if it was not old, as it is wonderfully tactile and whoever carved it was obviously skilled.Thank you.

I do believe this is a fantasy piece that was made much much later than the Hongshan period and possibly modern. I cannot recall seeing this type of jade carvings in any documented excavations or on any reliable Hongshan jade books. The biggest problem, IMHO, was that it was made of probably a type of nephrite jade that was not found in the Hongshan area and vicinity, and was most likely being imported from outside China. Those corrosion and stains found on its surface are also highly suspicious, appear to be very artificial, made by sand blasting and/or other artificial means. I also do not like the look of its hole. Now it may not be bad for a study piece though. Of course, since I am not an expert, I can be wrong. Super

sorry, this item has been artificially aged.
