Subject:Jade Elephant - How Old?
Posted By: Anthony Wed, Jul 08, 2015 IP: 31.53.126.60

Can anyone help me with how old this carving might be? I’ve had it about 11 years, passed on from an uncle. I think it is jade since it cannot be scratched with a steel nail. It is also quite big and measures about 3.75 x 3.5 inches.

To be fair, use warm water and dish wash detergent
plus a toothbrush ( does not have to be your own)
and some elbow grease and make it very clean. Then take some sharp pictures, and ask the same question.
rgrds.

Dear Ernest, I think I can see where you are coming from - the muck might be hiding damage or other flaws, but I am afraid that if I remove it, it will affect the aesthetics of the piece. Regards, Phil

Anthony... clean it, as it is only there to make a buyer believe that it is a burial piece. Most likely it looks much better with the dirt removed.
YOu don't see dirty items like that in a museum !

Thanks, Ernest. I will give it a careful clean over the weekend and get back to you. If it turns out the dirt is cement residue, then we will know it isn't old (cheers, Stan)

If that muck is what I think it is, it is added to try to make the object look old and is almost impossible to remove. It is a sign of recent manufacture.

Cheers,
Stan

Ernest - we've been given your name as a Jade expert. We are in England so can't bring in the items. Probably BC Jade by M Mok and T Wu. Would you let me have your email address for correspondence on the items please ? Thanks.
