Subject:Trumpet-Shaped Chinese Stand? Whaddizit?
Posted By: Craig Mon, Jul 13, 2015 IP: 168.103.48.93 An acquaintance owns this and is wondering what it is. It's pretty large, about 2.5' tall, and breaks into three sections. Looks Chinese to me, and is made of brass with cloisenne. I think it might be a brazier stand, but have never seen anything quite like it. Does anyone have a clue as to what this actually is? |

This is a "gu"-form beaker, a ritual wine beaker shape that dates in bronze from China's Shang Dynasty; yours may be a 19th/20th century Japanese version, or a modern Chinese version. The elephant head handles reflect Qing dynasty imperial cloisonne forms. |
