Subject:Chinese Silk Art
Posted By: D Wed, Jul 15, 2015 IP: 50.92.16.227

Hello!

I was wondering if someone could give me some more information on this piece. I have seen Chinese silk art/embroidery before but nothing of this detail or scale nor can I seem to find any other piece that's comparable to it. The size of the piece is 25" H x 14" W. It is marked/signed but I cannot read it (any translation would be appreciated!). Thanks for the info!

I'll pass on trying to read the mark, but Chinese embroidery of such realistic detail usually is identified with Suzhou (蘇州), in Jiangsu Province.

I've included a link here to a previous forum thread on the subject.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you all for your help! I had a feeling it may be from Suzhou. Any ideas on the age?

PS Botan thanks for the graphic! One of these days I will be able to read the script!

This is an example of double sided embroidery from the city of SuZhou, in China. Often the animal depicted will be different on each side, for example brindle on one side, and say white on the other.

The side you have shown is actually the back, as the seal is reversed. It reads SuXiu 蘇繡, which means 'embroidery from SuZhou'.

Hi,
The mark means "Suxiu" 蘇 繍 .

Suxiu is a trademark of embroidery work made in Suzhou,Jiangsu Province,China.

Your photograph is of the back side of the piece, the inscription reads 蘇繡,or "Suzhou Embroidery", a generic name that doesn't point to a specific manufacturer.
