Subject:Cneed help identify Pottery Mark
Posted By: Chad Wed, Jul 15, 2015 IP: 67.61.51.27

Hi I have this vase that says made In Japan and then has what I am thinking the pottery maker in Japanese. I am hoping someone can help identify this maker. I am thinking it is from right after WWII. Any help is appreciated.

Guy has previously identified a mark with the same characters as read "Shizan" or "Kizan" on a piece of Satsuma ware. Your vase has nothing in common with Satsuma as far as I can tell, but there may be a family kiln or studio connection between different generations of makers.

Here's a link to the previous thread.

Best regard,

URL Title :Shizan

Hi Bill,

In case of Chad's vase, the signature reads not 'Shizan' or 'Jizan' (喜山) but 'Juzan - MADE IN JAPAN' (壽山 MADE IN JAPAN).

Thank you both for your help.

Done in by that Satsuma scrawl yet again.

But aren't the characters on Chad's vase 嘉山 (Kayama or Kazan among other possibilities?) vice 壽山 (Juzan).

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill,

Oops. You have it right, must be read 'Kazan' or 'Kayama' as indicated.

Guy.
