Subject:A cloisonne vase, Japan?
Posted By: Evgeny Tue, Jul 28, 2015 IP: 37.192.124.125

Hello. I think Japan and interesting holes at the bottom, don't know why. The designs of the dragons and the border patterns seem to be Japanese, but the technique is very different from most Japanese enamel work. Interested in your opinion.

Twisted wire cloisonne, used by the Chinese but especially by the Russians.
Gilded background, also seen in Russian works.
Lines of tiny circles, typical of Russian work but also used by the Japanese.
A Japanese-style 3-toed dragon, that bears a strong resemblance to the Old Dragon in Chen Rong's Nine Dragons painting.
Waves and rocks that don't match the standard Chinese iconography at all.
A sort of stumpy Chinese brass vase shape, plus the odd added foot to raise the piece higher, and, as you noted, those mysterious holes?
The rim seems added on as well.
The elaborate beaded frieze around the neck seems more like something one would expect on a piece of Buddhist imagery.
The butterfly and vine scroll sections look like something drawing on Chinese and Japanese renderings, but not following the same design strictures.
A Russian work trying to look "Oriental"?
Was it somehow adapted to be a sort of finial decoration for a large lamp below the base?

Evidently some Japanese workshop(s) used twisted wire - here are some examples.

So between the background spirals, rows of dots, and dragon theme, the evidence seems to lean toward Japan?

The mix of twisted and round wires in these pieces is of interest - one doesn't see that in Chinese or Russian cloisonne.

Thank beadiste for participation in the discussion and for providing the photos. Add detailed photos. The hole has a diameter of 28 mm. The height to the bottom of the vase 35mm. Maybe the spark plug hole?
