Subject:Help with Old Chinese scroll
Posted By: Charmaine Mon, Aug 10, 2015 IP: 98.225.94.113

Hi, I recently acquired several old Chinese pieces and am trying to get help with them. Any information on the artist, translation, or any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

This one is genuine, your other one is junk with a bunch of fake imperial stamps.

The inscription begins with a poetic couplet in two lines of 7 characters, then states that the picture was painted by Bo Weiguang 鲍炜光, a female painter, in Shanghai, most likely in autumn 1934 (1874 is the less likely alternative). The first seal is her surname Bo, the second her given name Weiguang. Not high quality painting but an ok example of traditional style.

Thank you rat. Any ideas on what the poetic couplet says?

邨舍半藏煙樹裡
遠山遙接暮雲中

The couplet can be translated as:

Half hidden behind the smoke (fog or smog) and trees was the village cottage(邨舍) ,

with the distant mountains extending far away inside the twilight(暮)clouds.

The first sentence of the couplet describes vividly the scene at the lower part of your painting while the second sentence describes that of the upper part.

What made it special is that this was an original couplet, not from any known poems that I know of.

Hope this helps. Enjoy.

Super

Thank you so much! I couldn't quite figure it out with Google translation, and can find nothing on the artist. Google translation:
太谢谢你了!我不能完全弄清楚与谷歌翻译,并能找到什么的艺术家。

You are very welcome. If you google 鲍炜光 you can indeed find quite a few persons with this name.

The one that may be your artist is this female artist who wrote an article titled "The artworks of female artists' painting & calligraphy exhibition" that was published in 1934, on the 31st volume, 13th issue of The Eastern Miscellany magazine

鲍炜光女士作 鲍炜光女士/作 1934年 第31卷 第13期 东方画报 (女子书画展览会作品)

The year did match that of your painting per rat's translation.
