Subject:18 Arhats plaques and Chinese inscriptions
Posted By: NicolasVietnam Mon, Aug 10, 2015 IP: 181.164.228.220

Dear Forum Readers,

I brought from Singapore a set of 4 hand-painted Chinese porcelain plaques representing the 18 Luohan. I suppose they are Family Rose paintings?

I would highly appreciate your help to understand the meaning of those inscriptions on the paintings, and ideally the identity of the painter.

Thanks and best regards,

Nicolas

This seems to be a modern creation attempting to be the work of Wang Qi 王琦, a leading painter of such plaques (one of the "Eight Friends of Zhushan").

Thanks for your answer. Indeed I knew a little bit the work of Wang Ki.

I guess there's no mention of date in the Chinese inscriptions o my plaques? Do you have any idea of their meeting maybe? Thanks again.

Wang Qi lived between 1884 and 1937, meaning that the cyclical year in the inscriptions on your plaques must be 1932. Dating works to within a few years of an artist's death is common on fakes, and meant to suggest that the item in question is an example of the artist's most mature and valuable style. Unfortunately your plaques appear to be much more recently made.
