Subject:Looking for info on this Meiji lion sculpture with signature
Posted By: LD Tue, Aug 25, 2015 IP: 174.117.111.84

I'm looking for any info on this statue, especially what the siganture/inscription says or who might have made it.

Thanks.

Lovely Meiji bronze. I'm struggling with the reading of that first character. The second character reads 'masa'.

I believe in Japan a shape like the top of the first character sometimes is given to radicals 9 (人 - man) and 12 (八 - eight), such as when writing "ku" in Kutani. If that's what has been done in this bronze mark, it would form the character 全, meaning "complete". However, I mention this only as edification and have no idea which of the several transcriptions might apply, if at all relevant to this mark.

Good luck,

Bill H

A variant of 羊? Seems not very plausible but you never know.
