Subject:Chinese Silk Banner with Embroided Tiger
Posted By: Ulrich Sun, Sep 13, 2015 IP: 149.154.203.117

Hi All,

We are looking for more information on a silk banner with an embroided winged tiger on a black background (see pictures below).

We do not have any background information on it. However, doing some internet search we came up with a couple of very similar and in many cases almost identical looking banners, including size:
* http://jsmacollection.uoregon.edu/detail.php?t=objects&type=all&f=&s=Chinese+art&record=599
* http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/69861
* http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/69862
* http://www.gg-art.com/news/photoshow5/26144l1.html

Some additional information:
* The banner was bought about 30-40 years ago at some local auction for little money.
* At the time of purchase, the banner was folded. It was then unfolded and framed behind glass, where it has remained ever since.
* The banner does not have a border like the other banners. The small part of the border visible on the first picture was added at the time of framing.
* It seems the banner has been restored in the past. Compared to the other banners, it contains additional ornaments. These are mainly present on the vertical folding line in the middle. On close inspection, you can clearly see that these additional ornaments are less finely woven than the rest of the silk.

We would be very happy with some extra information on this banner and its possible value.

Thanks,
Ulrich

Pictures:

The banner is currently framed behind glass. With the black background it is acting like a mirror when taking pictures. The first image is altered to make the background black again.

Sorry for double-posting your link to the Kangxi banner. But here's another one:

http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/textiles-costume/an-embroidered-blue-silk-flying-tiger-banner-5796872-details.aspx

"Tigers with bat-like wings were associated with military personnel since the mid-Ming dynasty. Flying tigers were featured on military banners from the 17th century.
An earlier, Kangxi period (1662-1722), flying tiger banner was sold in Christie's New York, 'The Imperial Wardrobe: Fine Chinese Costume and Textiles', 19 March 2008, lot 41."
