Subject:Worldly protector or mountain goddess thangka?
Posted By: Ben Mon, Sep 14, 2015 IP: 95.90.237.83

Dear People at AsianArt Forum,

I could use some help on identifing the subject of this thangka, as well as its possible time and place of origin.
Telling from condition, pigments and darkening of the canvas I woul suppose its either an excellent fake or authentic and old, yet I cant say if 19th century or older.
The only figure I can identify is padmasambhava central top. The main subject seems similar to one of the five foremost deitys, but she (?) appears to be riding what looks to me like a Rooster? There are inscriptions on the back under each figure, but they do not seem to show the deitys names but may be om ah hum blessings?
Any help on identifying the deitys involved as well as age and place of origin would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
Ben

Dear Ben,
Could you post 4 more photos:
3 of the 3 thirds of the paint(or a larger one of the paint) and 1 of the back of the thangka?
Thank you very much.
Rémy

Dear Remy,

Thanks for you reply. Due to the spam protection delay I am not sure if you wrote before the additional pictures have been uploaded. Nevertheless the file size limit of 100 kb makes it very hard to provide sufficient detail. So Instead I will now privide a link to high res pictures of front and hack, that hopefully provide enough detail to be usefull. If needed I cant upolad detail pictures in high res as well.

Dear Rémy,

Thanks for your help! I suppose these inscripitions are fairly common and don't say much about the theme or origin of the thangka?

After some more book research, i found that tseringma of the five longlive sisters is sometimes shown with the same attributes of mirror an silkscarfscattached to an arrow. The colors of her sisters also match, despite they are usually all riding diffrent animals. Yet I have seen at least some initiation cards with tseringma riding all sorts of animals apart from the usual snow lion. Mount Everest mountain godess tseringma was turned into a buddhist protector by padmasambhava so this would fit to his prominent position in the painting?
Could this be a thangka of tseringma and her sisters of long life? Any comments greatly appreaciated!
