Subject:Need Help Identifying Seal Marks
Posted By: Kevin Wed, Sep 16, 2015 IP: 69.120.48.16

Hello,
I appreciate the nice details to the finial and coloration. And, I would like some help identifying the marks, and approximate age of the piece
Ochre yellow soapstone, some red veining
H: 4 1/4" (10.8 cm)

Thank you

The seal reads: 奇德瑞燿。 ji or qi de rui yao (special virtue lucky honour). Nicely carved - but in Kaishu, which usually means either a merchant's seal or something carved for a non-Chinese person, putting their name in phonetic equivalents.

What a pity. Such a handsome stone with no relevance to its Chinese cultural significance. The only side panel we can't see is the one that would traditionally have carried the signature of the carver, but I believe it too would be unmarked.

A carver with the degree of skill and technique shown here could have carved a more meaningful seal in Seal Script.

奇瑞耀徳
If translated simply,it means "Luck comes to a virtuous person".

I have added this photo of the seal inked onto paper, it might be easier to read the marks this way

your comments would be greatly appreciated,
thank you
