Subject:Need information on jade? necklace
Posted By: George E Sat, Sep 19, 2015 IP: 24.190.84.18

I bought this at an estate sale. The touch feels like real stones but I have no experience in jewelry. Any comment is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
George

Once US trade with China was resumed in the early 1970s, designers flocked to obtain components, as Chinese-themed jewelry was all the rage.
The beads in your necklace appear to be carved bone, bowenite serpentine, jasper or agate stained to a cinnamon carnelian hue, and a mysterious carved black piece which resembles a dark acrylic that was sold as amber, although it could possibly be carved jet.
Your necklace seems fairly well-constructed, with the use of bouillon coil, similar to pearl stringing. This particular tassel is one that appears on Les Bernard chinoiserie pieces from around the 1980s, and I've also seen it on an early Judith Leiber cloisonne pendant necklace.

More recent than 1970s, not Les Bernard.

What does the bar clasp for the stone ring look like?

The light color pendants are either Jade or Serpentine. Scratch test will tell. take a strong needle, use enough pressure to make as 2-3 mm scratch. Then tell us if the tiny scratch is white or black. or do you see some wax come off.

Thanks beadiste and Ernest for your respond. The scratched spot is white and I will provide better picture of the clasp beadiste.

George

In thiS CASE THE WHITE IS THE INDICATOR THAT THE STONE IS SOFT,,,AND CANNOT BE JADE...FOR SURE !!

Designers who produce a complete line of course usually mark their work, often on the clasp. So I was curious to see the style of the clasp, and if it matched those of any designers I'm familiar with.
Bar and toggle clasps became very popular after the late 1990s as bead stores and wholesalers catering to hobbyist and art show designers flourished. Importers such as the Abeada company sold Chinese stone beads and components very like the ones used in your necklace.

Thanks Ernest and beadiste for the info. Chinese jewelry is such a mystery to me.
