Subject:Japanese Pottery Statue...what does Signature Say?
Posted By: Frank Wed, Sep 23, 2015 IP: 69.247.17.93 I have acquired a rather good quality pottery piece of two mice perched on a rucksack. The base is signed and also has some sort of Japanese hallmark. Was wondering if anyone had an ID for the signature and the approximate age? Thank you.

Posted By: Gman Thu, Sep 24, 2015 I can't address the marks on this piece, but the subject is likely the bag of precious objects often shown with two rats or mice associated with the Japanese deity "Daikoku", one of the 7 Propitious Gods of Japanese folklore.

Posted By: Guy Tue, Sep 29, 2015 The hallmark reads 'Daigo', followed by 'Daigo saku' (大五作, made by Daigo) refering to the kiln of Fukuoka Daigo in the village Okawachiyama (Imari). Contemporary Nabeshima quality ware that is sold to tourists visiting Okawashiyama (cfr. local website).
