Hello List Members...

I have recently been given three bird prints in very battered gold frames.

Upon closer examination, I think that they are watercolours and not prints so have decided to reframed and hang them in my study.

I would appreciated if someone could confirm that they are indeed watercolours and help in translating the seal in red on all of the watercolours including the calligraphy in black under each of the seals?. I am quite sure that all the red seals are identical?

They probably all date from the 1920's and are by the same artist?

The picture that you show is neither a watercolor nor is it Chinese. It is a Japanese woodblock print designed by the artist Ohara Koson.

According to the catalog raisonne "Crows, Cranes, and Camellias: The Natural World of Ohara Koson", where it is cataloged as K28.2, this print was published by Daikokuya and is titled "Two barn swallows diving toward a small insect in flight".

It goes to show that this forum has many learned members who are prepared to spend time in providing answers to the many queries which are posted daily.

Having the artist's name I searched the web and found many entries for this artist, next I will need to purchase the mentioned book.

These birds are swallows.
This watercolor painting was written by Ohara(family name) Koson who was a Japanese painter.(小原 古邨)
