Can anyone tell me about this vase which has been in our family for years. Thanks

The mark, shown separately, says "Made in Imperial Japan by Kanzan" (Dai Nippon [or 'Nihon'] Kanzan Sei) and is associated with Kanzan Denshichi (1821-1890), a well-known Meiji Period porcelain artist and protégé of Makuzu Kozan. The colors on the vase look atypically muddy for a work by Kanzan, which appearance may be a product of bad lighting and definitely isn't alleviated by the poor focus. You might want to look at some of the online examples of Kanzan's porcelains and compare them to the actual look of yours.

Meanwhile, here's a small Kanzan pot with a non-original silver lid which has been identified by one of our gurus as mark and of the period.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks Bill. Here's a picture taken in a little better lighting. The original picture does not do the colors or detail justice. Thanks again
