Subject:Father passed away, left many things (jade, pictures, bronze?)
Posted By: Glenn Sun, Oct 25, 2015 IP: 70.208.135.213

Earlier this year, my father passed away. He had developed lewy body dementia, and kept it hidden through his intelligence. Because of this, we never had a chance to ask him about the things he had collected. He lived in China (Shanghai) for ~30 years, but traveled almost everywhere.

Unfortunately, the 100kb picture size will not show the details, so these "thumbnails" are what I think are the most interesting. I have included a link where I have posted the full resolution images of the items in question.

If you could help out at all in identifying anything, I would greatly appreciate it. Because of his status/wealth/interests, I can only assume that at least some of these are more than decorator pieces. I know that he had an assistant/security that would help him find things of interest. If there are any follow up questions, please let me know.

Extra information about these three items:
1. The "Hatchet" has a jade base, and the back "blade" is metal, not sure about front blade. Weighs 436g

2. The teapot is hollow on the inside, missing the "cap", maybe bronze?
weighs: 1774g

3. The blade is metal, has some faint writing on one side, and weighs 202g

I took a look at the jade pieces in your father's collection, unfortunately IMHO, they are mostly modern imitation archaic and Neolithic (Liangzhu culture) pieces that were with a lot of artificial weathering and I do not believe any of them were made of real jade - nephrite or jadeite. Now it is quite possible that he may indeed have some nice pieces and may require closer examinations by professional jade appraisers. I would advise you to contact some reputable auction houses and see if they may be interested in taking a look at the pictures of your father's collection. When my father passed away, he left me with a few pieces of unique jadeite pendents, none of them are worth a lot of money, but their sentimental values to me were simply priceless and I keep every single one of them. The most valuable item he left me was actually his Leica M3 camera that he spent several months of his salary and bought it in the 60s in Hong Kong. He allowed me to use it when I was a youngster. That was a lot of trust. Now it was worth much more than its original purchase price, but how can I part with it?

My father was a very good photographer, even a professional one and therefore his camera is worth a lot of money. Most collectors are simply casual collectors and therefore their collections some time would have more sentimental values than monetary. Of course, I can be wrong and I can only wish you good luck. It was indeed hard to lose your loved ones. Super
