Subject:Agate (Carnelian) Year of the Snake?

The stone is agate (quartz), likely dyed and/or heat-enhanced to that orange color. Don't know how the etching was done, but it's modern.

Although I am illiterate in Chinese, one side of the pendant seems to show the character for "snake," as well as a picture of a snake.

Genuine red nephrite jade is quite rare. Your pendant is probably a tourist piece that was made of either soft stone or agate and was dyed red. If you cannot scratch it with a pocket knife (or needle), then it would be made of agate. It was for somebody who was born in the year of snake, with the picture and character of snake on one side and four characters that mean to have a peaceful and safe life on the other. Not a lot of monetary value but if you like it, that would be what is important.

Beadiste, the etching is done wih acid, a lot of stones were treated that way about 30 years ago, then usually dyed brown, and declared to be antique

Hopefully it wasn't something awful like fluoric acid...
