Subject:republic period bowl
Posted By: GerryG Sun, Nov 01, 2015 IP: 89.126.102.203

I recently acquired this small bowl which I believe is republic period though it could be later. Bird and flowers scene on one side with four character under-glaze hand painted blue mark. Any further information on bowl or mark would be appreciated.

The mark is that of Jingdezhen, an area in China which is host to a number of kilns. Regards, Jim

Thanks Jim for taking the time to reply. In the interim I have since discovered myself this mark to be Jingdezhen. From what I can see it's a bit more unusual for marks of this period to be hand painted underglaze blue and I'm thinking this piece is probably mid 20th century and of pretty good quality so maybe an antique for the future. Thanks again for your input. Gerry

Your Jingdezhen mark is similar to those used in the 3rd quarter, 20th century and has the look of an unevenly applied stamp, with none of the precision and differences in brush-handling pressure that are characteristic of hand-written marks.

Best regards,

Bill H.
