Subject:Two of pair? woodblocks? watercolors?
Posted By: lori Tue, Nov 03, 2015 IP: 173.70.84.6

Measures about 9.5x14.75 inches (sight).

This is the second of two which I am posting; I can't determine if it is a woodblock or a watercolor (I believe they are woodblocks)

I will be adding another image of the writing on the side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Iori,
The two are woodprints after or by Hiroshige.
Original or later prints?Specialists could tell you more.
Best Regards,
Rémy

The artist is Hiroshige I. I believe this is from his series 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road the Hoeido edition. This looks to be a repro. I'll take a closer look when I have time.

Cheers,
Stan

Your print is a repro of the Oiso Station (#9) from Hiroshige I's series 53 Stations of the Tokaido Road the Hoeido edition. See the link below for an original. Click on the Oiso picture for a bigger picture.

Pardon my ignorance; I am still somewhat confused.

Is not every woodblock print a "repro" as they are all made from one original?

Or are you saying that these are "copies" or "reproductions" of one of many woodblock prints?

And if so, what exactly distinguishes a "copy" or "repro" from an "original" print?

I thank you for indulging me.

Thank you for your help so far.

Is there something I can look for to help determine if this pair is original or a repr0?

I know for a fact that they are fro at least the 1940's or 1950's

Don't get your hopes up. The inks look modern (too bright; no sign of fading, etc.)

Lines are too sharp. No foxing or aging to th paper.

And remember, the 1940 and '50s wer when there were lots of GIs wandering around Tokyo and yokohama with money to burn.

This series has been reproduced (well or otherwise) scores of times since they were first printed in the mid 19th C.

That is the definition of a repro. The original was printed in the early 1830s.

Also, the original didn't have the red text in the border. If you get that translated, it will likely tell you the publisher and the date it was published.

Stan
