Subject:Please Help Identify this Japanese Satsuma Plate
Posted By: Joe Sat, Nov 07, 2015 IP: 69.126.250.62

I recently purchased the pictured Japanese Satsuma plate. It was stated to be from late 19th or early 29th century. It stated the base inscription states "the artist "Tashiro Zo" (Made by Tashiro). Can anyone tell me if I am correct in the above and can anyone help me further identify the inscription on the face of the plate? Any further help will be greatly appreciated.

Joe

You're correct. The base mark reads down from the right as "Imperial Japan, Made by Tashiro. You'll find other information on Japanese ceramics with this mark and that of 'Tashiro Shoten', another name associated with this Yokohama (not Satsuma) firm, at gotheborg.com. The inscription appears to be a verse related to the painting. You'll need a native Japanese scholar to translate it properly.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill,

I briefly tried searching for further information on 'Tashiro Shoten' on gotherberg.com but the marks all have a picture of an elephant. I will have to look into it deeper on the web site or google it.

Thank you again for your help. I is greatly appreciated.

Joe
