Subject:Japanese Satsuma Vase Identification Help Please
Posted By: John Thu, Nov 12, 2015 IP: 69.126.250.62

Can anyone help me with identifying the picture Japanese Satsuma vase. I tried researching the seal on the base, (Being a novice)am I correct in stating it says "Dai Nippon Satsuma Hodota". Am I correct? If so or not any help in identifying the piece re: artist, seal, age etc. would be greatly appreciated.

John

Appears to read down from the top right as 'Dai Nippon [or Nihon], Satsuma Yaki, Ryuzan Zo' (Imperial Japan, Satsuma Ware, Made by Ryuzan). Hodota would be three characters 保土田, whereas Ryuzan is two, 龍山. Hang in there with your efforts to read this stuff. The characters in this mark are somewhat like the proverbial doctor's handwriting.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I yield to Guy on the last character's translation (egaku).

Now back to my Japanese primer.

Thanks,

Bill,

Being a novice your help and expertise is greatly appreciated. I actually thought I had it correct, but I was wrong. I have many years of studying.

You are correct about the handwriting. lol

Thank you again.

John

The mark reads 'Dai Nippon, Satsuma yaki, Ryûzan egaku' (大日本 薩摩焼 龍山描, Imperial Japan, Satsuma porcelain, painted by Ryuzan).
Good quality, Meiji period, ca. 1900.

Guy.

You and Bill have been so helpful to myself and the many others on this forum with your time and expertise.

A good friend of mine posted on here on 11/07/15, looking for help in identifying his Japanese Satsuma plate. Its a very nice plate, with an inscription on the face. He asked me to see if you be able to look at it when you have time? I believe Bill did already.

Thank you again.

John
