Subject:Any information about this Chinese portrait?
Posted By: Daphne Fri, Nov 13, 2015 IP: 82.35.221.225

Hello,

I have a large Chinese portrait - see pictures. Would anyone be able to let me know anything about it/translate the text?

From some online research it looks like it may be one of many copies of a Qianlong Emperor portrait?

Many thanks.

Kangxi, not qianlong. Modern imitation

The character script reads from left to right in mandarin pinyin as 'Sheng Zu Kang Xi Huang Di' (聖祖康熙皇帝), translatable as '[Our] Divine Ancestor [or Patron Saint] the Kangxi Emperor'.

Since the script read from the left in Western style, I believe the print would be from the 20th century, probably Republic period (1912-1949) or somewhat later.

Best regards,

Bill H.
