The design is quite striking...not the kind of quality expected on on brass. I recommend you try cleaning the very bottom with silver polish as a test....you may find out the brass color is a thick accumulation of tarnish over either silver or nickel.

Generally, Japanese silver is only about 90%, so over 50 years, the tarnish accumulates quickly and can be as thick as paint.

I have found many many Japanese silver boxes sold as brass because of this phenomena.

Thanks for the information, Tim.
I rubbed and rubbed the underneath of the container, and though it became brighter, no silver is showing through so far. Maybe I'll take it to a jewelry store and see if it tests for silver.
