Subject:Vintage or Antique Chest - Chinese or Korean?
Posted By: Margie Sun, Jan 17, 2016 IP: 98.253.238.56

I bought this in Hong Kong in 1990 from an antique store which sold both Chinese and Korean furniture.
I'm wondering if anyone would know what kind of wood this is? It seems similar to Japanese keyaki. The metalwork seems too minimalist for Korean but it might be that.
The chest measures 31" x 16" x 17" high.

Not Chinese, especially with that sort of hardware. (or if Chinese then it would be from the northeast border between China and Korea where there are ethnic Koreans). You can also ask on facebook as there are a few Korean dealers in this group.

Hi Margie,
This box seems to be Korean. If my memory is correct they use Zelkova (keyaki ) in Korean furniture as well as Japanese furniture.
The pins on the front lock plate are to take a padlock, which is typically Korean . The metalwork (brass/bronze ) is also typical of Korea
