Subject:painting

I've owned the attached painting for years and love it, and I would like to know more about it, like who painted it, it's age, etc. (The pics are sideways). Can anyone help?

The seal impression is too indistinct to read but the inscription reads"xinyou year 辛酉年", which equates to 1981. there's a long tradition of painting flowering plum blossoms in China, dating back to the Song dynasty. If you are interested in the genre, Maggie Bickford's "Bones of Jade, Soul of Ice" exhibition catalog brings together some leading examples.

Thank you so much for your response. I will try to locate a copy of the catalog you mentioned ...I think that the painting has such perfect balance and expression that I would love to know who the artist is, and I'm sorry that the seal is so hard to read.
Thanks again, Bob

most of the works in that exhibition catalog are in monochrome ink rather than color and aren't in large photographs, so while the catalog is not expensive, you may get more out of the images of key artists. Google together with the word "plum" any of the following artists: Jin Nong, Wang Mian, Chen Lu, Lu Fu, Yan Hui, Yang Hui, Yang Wujiu, Yansou, Zou Fulei, Ma Yuan, Ma Lin. These are all painters from centuries ago. I'm afraid the name of your artist will be nearly impossible to ascertain unless someone happens to recognize the seal or painting style, which I think is unlikely.
