Subject:Tiger scroll
Posted By: Robin Fri, Jan 29, 2016 IP: 73.12.114.239

My parents have an old tiger scroll that needs repair. The wooden hanger piece has torn off and I was wondering if I can re glue it. I reached out to a local shop that quoted me a price to reattach the hanger $160 to $180 which i thought was rather high and a quote of $650 to $870 to restore the scroll, which I don't think is really needed.

This was probably purchased in the 1950's over seas when my father was in the service.

I included some photos. I don't think this thing is worth a lot of money but I would like to see it fixed. What would you guys suggest?

I agree that the painting itself does not seem obviously in need of restoration unless I have missed noticing a stain or something, and in any case the cost to do so probably exceeds the value of the scroll unless you have access to mounters in the Asian community. The repair to the upper stiffener and hanging strap are worth doing if you plan to display the scroll; one alternative is to frame it but I imagine that will cost just as much as the repair, and you will usually lose the proportions of the original mounting and the flexibility being able to roll it up and put it in the closet when not on display. The picture seems decent quality but the quoted cost for repairing the torn off piece may constitute a good fraction of its market value. (it's Japanese if you did not know this already) You need to decide how much it's worth to you to have the picture whole and how that compares to the cost. There aren't any low cost alternative solutions except duct tape...

Thanks Rat, that is very helpful. The scroll itself is in wonderful condition since my mother kept it in a credenza most of it's life. Somehow the hanger tore off of it. I think I'll have the guy proceed with repairing the hanger instead of framing. I'd like to keep it as original as possible. I just wanted a gut check on the pricing, so I appreciate your advice. Here's a photo of it having in the 1950's with my brother and sister standing in front of it. Funny thing is, I have that lamp, the vases, the ash tray and those teak tables. Maybe I'll have to do a recreation shot when I get the scroll repaired.

Thanks for letting me know it's Japanese too. I wonder how old it is

ha, nice outfits! My mother put me in a plaid jacket once too.

There were lots of these paintings sold in Japan during the US occupation and later, so yours may be an example, but to me (not knowing a lot about Japanese art) the quality is above average, though I don't know whether that points to an earlier date or just a better painter. My guess is that it is postwar but could be prewar. You might repost with "Japanese scroll" in the title to attract the attention of those experts.
