Your picture was woven on a Jacquard loom and possibly hand-colored. Here's the link to an eBay listing for the same crucifixion scene in black and white, dated by the seller to the 1880s. The Jacquard loom dates to 1801, according to Wikipedia.

Hope this helps further your research.

wow, I always learn something from your posts.

however (for the original poster) on this one the name of the factory that is across the bottom margin starts with 中華民国, meaning that this cannot date from before 1911.

Hmmm, sounds like an early Republic of China businessman might have gone out and bought himself a turnkey weaving factory with a box full of "All-Time Greatest Hits" among loom pattern cards of recent decades.

Thank you both for help! Yes, it does appear to have been hand tinted or colored after weaving. The other ones I'm seeing now, state they are French- this is obviously not, as it hAs the Chinese characters on the border. Any idea what else the characters say? (Besides Republic of China?)

not without closeup pictures of the bottom margin.

Four characters on top of the picture:
(from right to left)
耶穌救世 - Jesus saves the world (title of the art work).

On the bottom (from right to left):

商 標 (with a mark between the two characters)
商標 means trade mark and the mark between the 2 characters was probably the trade mark of the company who manufactured this painting.

Then

中華民国 The Republic of China
都錦生 Du Jin Sheng (Name)
絲織廠 Silk Weaving Factory (Company)
監製 jian zhi - supervise the manufacturing of

Incidentally, the Du Jin Sheng 都錦生 Silk Weaving Factory 絲織廠 was founded by a Mr. Du Jin-sheng 都錦生 at Zhe Jiang 浙江(province) Hang Zhou 杭州(city) in the 11th year of the Republic of China (1922). That means your piece probably could not be older than 1922.

Incidentally, in 1966 its name was changed to 东方红丝织厂 (The Oriental Red Silk Weaving Factory), in 1972 changed to 杭州织锦厂 (Han Zhou Silk Picture Weaving Factory) and only in 1983 it was reverted back to its original name.

Incidentally, this is its current web site:

Hope this helps.
