Subject:Chinese Scroll Help and Translation Please
Posted By: John Sat, Feb 06, 2016 IP: 69.126.250.62,66.249 I recently purchased the pictured scroll. Can anyone help me with identifying the artist, age and or translation. There is an inscription on the scroll and also on the edge once it is rolled up (Someone also scribbled out some of the inscription). There was apparently a label on the end of the wooden box and currently a small label on the box. Any help will be greatly appreciated. |

Posted By: rat Tue, Feb 09, 2016 Your plan sounds fine, though if the scroll fits the box well you can simply continue to use the box. Especially if you can expect humidity in your area, add one of those small dessicant sachets that you often see in packages of dried seaweed or other products that are meant to be kept dry. (The Japanese often custom built boxes for specific scrolls but these days there are a lot of old boxes floating around and your painting may have been paired with one.) |

Posted By: rat Thu, Feb 11, 2016 The most recent message I have from you is dated Monday, Feb 8, to which I replied on Feb 9. I haven't received another, and it's not in my spam folder. Please feel free to resend if you responded to that message, I don't understand why it might have gone missing. |

Posted By: rat Mon, Feb 08, 2016 This is a Japanese painting but inscribed exactly as Super has described. The style derives from late Ming painter Lan Ying despite the reference to 20th century Qi Baishi, who did not work in this style. The name 耕石道人 is a pen name; there are books that list artists by their artist/pen names but I don't have any for Japanese artists. |
