Subject:Old Tibetan Prayer Wheel - Jade, Ivory, Silver
Posted By: Margie Tue, Apr 05, 2016 IP: 98.253.238.56

This was bought in Nepal in 1970. Does it appear older or is it a tourist item from then?
Do the jade and ivory look real or good quality?
Thanks for any information.

I am a novice here with an interest in Tibetan items, so in my humble opinion, it is hard to tell from the picture the quality of the ivory handle or the jade. From what I can see, the "Jade" Looks more like serpentine instead of a hard jade and the silver work looks like the more prolific tourist market than the older items where each part was worked with prayer and intention. You may want to test to make sure it is silver, as most prayer wheels like this that I have seen are actually more nickel than silver. The Nickel will withstand a lot of use and travel better than silver will. It is still very attractive and shows some years of use.

Thanks for your response, Nels. I tend to agree with you.
