Subject:Identification , Japanese carving? Please help!

I have been trying to find some information on this old carving for a few weeks now with no luck. My gut tells me that it's Japanese and old. It measures 5'' tall by 3 1/2'' wide. There is a carved calligraphy mark on the bottom that I am very curious about but I am unsure if I posted the picture from the right angle. I would love to know who this carving is depicting, how old it is, and what the marks on the bottom mean? Also, is there any significance to why it is all black? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
