Subject:Square Japanese or Chinese Token, Charm or Amulet
Posted By: Living-in-the-past Thu, Apr 21, 2016 IP: 99.46.200.82

Acquired this token, charm or amulet today. It is 22mm made out of silver alloy or white metal (non-magnetic) with makers mark on back. Would like to know if it is Japanese or Chinese and if anyone has any information on it.

I believe the impressed characters on the piece read from the top down and then right to left as 'Xianzhi Tongbao" (仙基通寶), which I would translated as "Currency of the (Daoist) Immortals".

It's difficult to say how old this might be, as Daoism still flourishes among many Chinese populations.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Check out primaltrek.com for further reading if you haven't already done so.

It appears to be a charm made to resemble a Japanese 1 Mon coin from Sendai. The genuine coin would normally be made from iron and have no scrollwork. A link to a numismatic reference is below.
