Subject:Snuff Bottle? Small Vase? Age?
Posted By: Jodi Tue, Apr 26, 2016 IP: 184.21.5.3

Hi,
I believe this is a snuff bottle but I am not sure. It is 3" tall and 1.5" wide. No top. I would also like to know what it says on the bottom and what era it came from if possible.
Thanks

Agree you have a snuff bottle, possibly transfer-decorated from what appears to be unintended breaks along edges in the motif. However, the mark of "Jade Trinket" (Wan Yu) looks to be handwritten. I'd opine it to date from circa 1930 to Mid-century.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Here are some more pictures. Could it be just wear not transfer breaks? The decoration is under glaze. What is it worth? I paid a hefty amount for it.

Older hand-painted and transfer-decorated snuff bottles of this sort would usually have the blue & white pattern under the glaze, where it would be immune from wear by rubbing. Your photos are just shy of the closer view and sharper focus that might permit a better reply, but here are some pictures of two late Qing-Republic period snuffs from my collection, the one with blue top having an apocryphal Yongzheng mark on its base. The taller, at about 3.25 inches, is an eighth of an inch more than the other. In my perhaps biased opinion, I believe they exhibit the finer and more even appearance that hand-painting has over transfer decoration. Perhaps others can cast further opinions on the subject.

As to price, I believe I paid about US$50-75 apiece for these at estate sales several years ago.

Best regards,

Bill H.
