Artist - Kunisada II, cir. August 1865

The artist is Kunisada (1786-1864). The subject is the actor Onoe Kikujiro II. I am having some trouble with the date seal, but I think it was printed in 1836 lunar month 4.

That would mean it would be advertising the play (see link below):
4th lunar month of 1836: premiere at the Moritaza of the drama "Hakkenden Uwasa no Takadono"; Kikujirô plays the roles of Princess Fuse, the ghost of Princess Fuse, Hamaji, Ohina, Fusahachi's wife Onui, Kakutarô's wife Hinaginu and Princess Taema [casting].

The print looks like one panel of a (likely) triptych. The print is faded.

Cheers,
Stan

I think geo is correct. The artist is Kunisada II. I shouldn't ID prints late at night. The actor is Onoe Kikujiro II. The play I identified is also wrong.

Cheers,
Stan

Your three prints together are a triptych, designed by Utagawa Kunisada II (1823-80) and published by Kiya Sôjirô (firm name Kôbokudô).
See link below.

The kabuki play is 'Musume hyôban zen’aku kagami' performed at the Ichimuraza in Edo (= Tokyo), 8th month 1865.

Actors from the right to the left:
- Bandô Hikosaburô V in the role of Manoya Tokubei;
- Onoe Kikujirô II as Tokubei's wife (Nyûbô) Otoki;
- Nakamura Tsuruzô I as Yamaneko Osan and Ichimura Kakitsu IV as Subashiri Okuma.

Guy.

As I mentioned, it looks like the first print is part of a triptych. You have all 3 panels.

If you take the first print and place the second to the right and the last to the left you'll see the scene spans the 3 prints. When I have more time, I may try to ID the 3 actors in the last 2 panels.

Cheers,
Stan
