Subject:Burmese Lacquerware
Posted By: peter6110 Mon, May 02, 2016 IP: 61.216.163.32

I think this might be Burmese Lacquerware, but I picked it on in the local antique market in China, not sure how it got there.

Any way to tell how old it might be ?

Thank you

China's Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture borders Laos and the Shan State of Burma, and is home to a large population of China's ethnic Tai people. Tai is the ethnic group comprising the majority populations of Thailand and Laos, and also represent a large minority in Burma, where they are called the Shan. Shan artisans in the State bearing their name make a lot of what is popularly called "Burmese" lacquer ware. So my first guess would be that your box might have been made by Tai artisans in Xishuangbanna, using tribal designs, though cross-border trade (or smuggling) can't be ruled out.

Best regards,

Bill H.
