Subject:Huanghuali Altar Table
Posted By: Nancy Christensen Sat, May 21, 2016 IP: 66.228.22.29

I'm hoping you can help me determine if this altar table is huanghuali? It measures L58" x H31.5" x w14.5." It has a beautiful shimmer, ghost faces and is extremely well made. Apparently it was brought here from the Philippines many years ago. Any help and/or opinions would be appreciated.

Hello Nancy, your Alter table looks to be southern elm and also could be early to mid 20 th century , nice quality ! I have a few different and similar items in similar wood. Regards Marcus

Yes,
I concur with Marcus on this being elm.
It is very possibly Sothern Elm, one would assume this to be the case given the works Suzhuo manner, (& from whence the finest of, non imperial, Chinese furniture comes) but it is not really possible to distinguish between that and Northern Elm on the basis of these images.
Jumu is distinctive from it's counterpart Yumu / Northern Elm, in it's density. Jumu being the finer / more dense of the two. It should have fine flecks across the quarter cut surface.
If it does not have these it is Yumu.
