Subject:any info on this bowl
Posted By: ANDREW Mon, May 23, 2016 IP: 50.92.69.250

thanks just looking to get some knowledge on this bowl. It measures about 7 " a round and stands about 4" high. The dish is very translucent when held up to light and has green spots that bleed through in areas. Not sure if it is as old as I believe it to be . Just a really pleasant piece to own. Thanks for your time.

I'd reckon that bowl to be late 20th century at the oldest, based on the rather pristine glaze and lack of typical brush overlap in the double circles around the faux Kangxi mark.

Tony Allen has documented the impact of the mid-1850s Taiping Rebellion on the production of porcelains with underglaze copper reds. It took a generation or more to recover, and in the meantime, some work similar to your bowl used a sort of purplish red overglaze red. Whatever was used on yours looks like it may be two-toned, which I believe probably wasn't seen in the Qing period. For comparison, here are some pictures of what I think is a pre-1850 "Immortals" spoon in underglaze blue and copper red, along with shots of what I take to be a late Republic Period vase with a underglaze blue & red peach decoration.

Best regards,

Bill H.
