Subject:repost - lacquered wood box
Posted By: wally Wed, May 25, 2016 IP: 73.78.179.2

The images did not come through on the first go, so I am going to try this again.

I would like to know more about this wood lacquer box, if anyone can help. It is a little more than a foot square and probably eight or so inches tall. I have photographed the characters on both sides of the box. Thanks!

The three characters in the middle image are 積玉堂 - Ji Yu Tang - the Jade Storage Hall. In the bottom image, the right-hand column reads down as 光緒拾八年桂月吉日 - Guangxu shiba nian gui yue ji ri - A propitious day in the cassia (eighth lunar) month during the 18th year (1892) of Guangxu. The left column begins as 西坦朝村王... - Xi tan zhao cun wang yu... . I'm a unsure of how this winds up, but it seems to start by saying the morning was peaceful in the villages of the West. Could be incorrect due to lack of context.

Best regards,

Bill H.
