Posted By: Cordelia Sat, May 28, 2016 IP: 90.221.62.142

What do the forum experts make of this piece then....Really interested to see how old you think it might be- or anything else you might be able to tell me about it!? Many thanks

Im not sure on date, but the first thing i'd do is test what kind of rock it is. Use a density test or hot pin test maybe.

Hi. I've done a scratch test. A hot pin test would prove its not plastic- not sure what you mean- can you explain please? It's certainly a Hardstone and very heavy and cold to the touch. I have a lot of Jade and it seems to be nephrite to me... can't be bothered to do a density test.... tried them before and the results I've had are inconsistent... clearly doing it wrong... The detail on the cuts are very perfect- soft and smooth (particularly the bow and fingers) which suggest to me it might be quite old... But again very interested in more experienced opinions on it to see if my own knowledge is starting to improve...! Thanks for your comments

On my ,monitor I see a cream colored stone with apple green inclusions, if that s correct, we are looking at Jadeite. Now you see how important S.G. testing is.

Thanks for your reply Ernest... I haven't had much to do with jadeite to be honest.... I did wonder about this but it looks similar to some pieces I know are Nephrite apart from the green colour being more intense.... It's a small piece.. Only around 2-3 inches, and I've been preoccupied with trying to study the nature of the cuts to ascertain age (I was told it was acquired as an 'antique' in the 70s) but I also know that there are many brilliant modern craftsmen out there.... The main reason I check this forum is to learn from the expertise of the likes of Yourself.... What do you think as to age-am I starting to learn how to recognise an older piece? Many thanks in anticipation of your reply...

That would be easy if you would live in BC Canada, or better yet, in the greater Vancouver area. Your pictures lack detail and sharpness, as most people think that sloppy pictures can bring expert answers. professional photos can bring the hoped for results. Pick up some older Jade books, as they show the styles of prior years. compare that with what you have. Slowly you will learn, but it takes years to understand Jade carvings, shortcuts only with help of an experienced collector, and even then it is a difficult field to penetrate. Hands on is my motto.

Hi Cordelia,
It is a late Qing (1890) or Early Republic era (1950's) carving of a Lohan immortal with a longevity peach. Jadeite is lower quality but has some antique value. I can help you sell some of your jade. I am a dealer. You can email me anytime at [email protected] if you would like.
Regards,
Lauren
