Subject:Guangxu Mark Fencai Dish
Posted By: Bill H Sun, May 29, 2016 IP: 74.178.202.254

Tony Allen's new book on spotting Chinese fake antique porcelains has me looking twice at everything I buy lately. This fencai dish with a high saucer shape is the most recent case. It has a very nice paint job, and is in fine condition. The mark also seems to compare alright with examples on Guangxu period porcelains shown in my Weishaupt collection catalogs.

What's got my antennae whirling is the diminutive size of only 10cm in diameter and 3cm high. The smallest example I've found of anything in the same shape is a pair of 13cm Guangxu fencai dishes in the Weishaupt catalog, "From the Dragon's Treasure", produced for a 1987 sale.

My post also bears on the knowledge that some very nice fencai dishes in the 18th century style were produced during the early Republic period.

I'm especially interested in finding anyone who has experience with something similar in their own collection, but all comments are welcome.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Well, the glaze looks right, and the mark is extremely well painted. I would say it is authentic.

George, my apologies for being so tardy in thanking you for your helpful comment. I was traveling when you responded and failed to check on my query before getting distracted by other matters.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Does it have rough klin grit at the foot? does it have iridescence on the green glass? if both answer is yes than it is not a replica if both answer is no than it most probably is a recent copy.
