Subject:Help Identify Seal Mark On Vase
Posted By: CJK Wed, Jun 08, 2016 IP: 67.61.54.43

Hi am needing help to identify who could have made this. So any help is very much appreciated. The piece is question is a green pottery vase. It is around 7 inches tall. Looks to be a studio type pottery.

I don't get a clear feel from the photos whether this is a Japanese or Chinese vase, though the biscuit around the mark might pass as from a Shiwan or other South China kiln. If Chinese, the mark (shown upside down) can be read in Mandarin as Tong (桐), and is the Paulownia tree. If this is Japanese, it also is the same tree but can be read as various surnames and given names. I'd think the piece most likely is vintage 20th century in either event.

Best regards,

Bill H.
