Subject:Help figuring out art piece I found
Posted By: Jospeh Faith Thu, Jul 21, 2016 IP: 65.32.180.151

I found this asian tetraptych (I don't know what region to put this in, Korean?) and I swear I've seen it before, but I just cannot place it or find it anywhere so I was hoping for some help. The boats are made of the shiny rainbow scales you find in oysters (the name escapes me). It's all painted onto wood and absolutely no markings or names anywhere I can find on them. It may just be an original piece, but I thought I would see if anyone could say otherwise.

Sorry, didn't see that the pictures have to be super small. Here's a link to a dropbox of them. Thanks.

Possibly depicts Thai boats and islands in the Andaman Sea near Phuket, a prime tourist destination. The location and such art were popular among American Military personnel assigned to Thailand during the Vietnam War, as well as other visitors.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hello Joseph,

Your lacquer and mother-of-pearl panels are Vietnamese. They depict traditional fishermen among the karst islands of Halong Bay along the north-east Vietnamese coast of the Gulf of Tonkin.

Similar lacquer panels, many in garish designs and colors are popular in the souvenir shops in Hanoi.

Wow, thank you. So you think it was more than likely a souvenir from a tourist visiting Hanoi? It looks relatively new maybe no more than 10 years old.

I must say, pictures of Vietnam from WSUS are worth thousands more than my words about Thailand, though the boats and karst islands around Phuket seem to bear a few similarities.
Best regards,
Bill H.
