Subject:Oriental Painting on Silk
Posted By: Brett Fri, Aug 05, 2016 IP: 69.119.204.101

Picked this up at a thrift store. The detail of the bird caught my eye so I took a chance. Is this Chinese, Japanese, or other? Possible year and artist would be nice too. Thanks for the help as always.

Contemporary Chinese, by someone named Li Hongzhu. 1990s or more recent.

Thanks, Rat.

Does the painting have a date/ mark for the time frame or was that just a guess? I knew this was 20th century. The quality just seemed better than the touristy type pieces I frequently see at sales. Actually Li Hongzhu has a few auction results that have decent prices so I am pleased to find out that he is the artist.

That's my guess based on the painting style and colors and the assumption that the artist was working in China when he painted this. The inscription includes no date.

The seal just reads "Li Hongzhu" in a different script type, though I see from one of your links that he may go by Lee Hung Chu, which if it is how he prefers to be named suggests that he may not have been painting these in mainland China. Still I think it unlikely that your picture predates 1990.

Also, would you mind telling me what the chop says? Or a possible title. This artist is excellent at painting birds from some of the others I have seen. Granted mine is not as fine, but he is still a good artist IMO.

Sorry, just saw this. The content of the seal is simply the artist's name, from right to left. It's in a different script than
