Subject:HELP Identify Marks
Posted By: Marvin Sun, Aug 14, 2016 IP: 50.171.25.174

Hi,

I purchased a silver divided bowl which has hammered outside. These are the marks on the bottom. Please help me identify them!

Thanks!

I have recently learned on my own that the important mark is JUNGIN. Jungin means pure silver and it was used during the Meiji Period 1868-1912 and shortly after. I believe my piece is Japanese, although the JUNGIN mark was used for both Japan and Korea. What I need to know now is the meaning of the other marks on bottom. They are the marks that indicate the artist or maker. I know the JUNGIN mark, so please help me identify the other 4 character marks. Thanks!

The upper mark reads 鴻池造 or 'Konoike sei' (made by Konoike) which refers to silversmith/manufacturer of export silver Konoike, based in Yokohama in the 1890s-early 1900s (Meiji period).

The second mark reads indeed 純銀 or 'jungin' (pure silver).

Guy.

Sorry, the Marks reads 'Konoike zo' or made by Konoike.
