Subject:first edition or later printing ?
Posted By: Jacob Sun, Aug 28, 2016 IP: 79.113.192.247

Hello,

I've got this shunga print by Tomioka Eisen. I wonder if it's the first edition or a later printing ? I wonder if there are known later editions of this shunga series. Thank you !

Jacob

I suspect it is an original. I couldn't find any information on your print other than this page in (I believe) Korean:

IMO, this is a much later reprint on a sigle sheet, possible from recarved blocks.
The original print was part of a folding album of twelve large-size prints, first published around 1896 and titled 'Yakumo no chigiri' (Pledge of Yakumo). The designs are attributed to Tomioka Eisen; the album was published and distributed by Shun'yôdô.
The album was succesful and reprinted. The printing blocks were subsequently sold to Matsumura and additional images were inserted, leading to several different versions.

As mentioned, original prints are mounted in an album and have a centerfold (see image).

Guy.

Sorry, something went wrong with the image. Here's another try.
