Subject:Is this by Komori Shinobu?
Posted By: Stuart Jeffcoat Sun, Aug 28, 2016 IP: 125.237.146.238

Hi. I think that this vase might be by Komori Shinobu but am unsure. It might be a piece that he made following his study trip to China in the early 1900s. Can anyone help re who this might be by - and when it was likely made? It has 20 sides to it - yip, 20! Thanks in advance.

Hi Stuart,

The mark is 文彬亭造 = Bunpintei Zo = Made by Bunpintei.
Bunpintei is the brand name of the Shinobu Komori (1889-1962) pottery. This pottery was located at Sanagu (Seto - Mie Prefecture).

More about Komori: The Ebetsu City Ceramic Art Center has some permanent exhibition rooms. Inside the “Ceramics of the North” room is the “Shinobu Komori Memorial Room”.
You can find out more yourself googling with some of the above keywords.
Regards,
Martin.

Thanks Martin - very much appreciated. I thought that this might be the case. However it seems very difficult to find much of his work and I have never seen any go through the auction houses etc. It seems that he is quite famous and yet there seems to be so little of his work about. Also I would love to know when that kiln was in operation. Have a nice day. Cheers, Stu

Indeed, the signature reads 文彬亭造 (Bunpintei zô), the brand name of Komori Shinobu.
